On this week’s “Create Home” we talk about the importance of inspecting your deck for signs of rot or decay. Rotted deck boards can occur due to moisture, sun exposure, poor drainage, or corrosion from certain fasteners. While pressure-treated wood is made to be outside, it’s not a complete solution. If you notice rot, address the underlying causes and replace the affected boards to keep your family and friends safe and fully enjoy your outdoor living space.

Yesterday was a very special day.. we closed on this beautiful property located in Sparta, NC. It was 10 acres of farmland with a stream, waterfalls, and two ponds, but it was not only special because of its many features..

My client was a veteran and was so happy that we were closing the day before Veterans Day, which was also the Marine Corps’ official birthday. It was such an honor to assist him in finding this property that he may enjoy for many years.

Here are 5 statement pieces that can change your space with hardly any effort (or Benjamin’s).

Accent walls: Accent walls are back in y’all! Even if you aren’t ready to go totally “off-the-wall.” You can darken a neutral you already have that will give your space depth and create a rich, layered look.

Throw pillows: If you’ve ever been to my house, you know how much I love pillows! They’re a great way to add interest and layers to your decor. Plus, you can switch ‘em out for the seasons or whenever you get tired of them.

An area rug: I’m in the process of changing out the rugs in my home and I’m amazed how many cleanable and beautiful options there are now. It’s a great way to add color or oomph when you have neutral furniture like me!

An ottoman: They make the space more functional, while also creating a statement in your room.

Light fixtures: Lighting is literally one of my favorite parts about design now. It used to be an afterthought when I was in design school, but then I realized how much of an impact lighting has on the way your home feels.

As a lot of you know, I worked incredibly hard this past winter and got my real estate license. This post is a little late, but I thought I would share a little bit about my story for those that may not know.

I have been interested in homes from an early age. As a little girl, I would look out of the window of my mom’s car and was fascinated by the homes that we would pass, inspired by their charm and unique character. I would spend hours lying on the floor in my childhood bedroom drawing floor plans, cutting and pasting from my mom’s Pottery Barn magazines. I knew then that I would be in the business of homes and developed a fierce passion and love for real estate.

Later in life, I decided to share my passion with others. I attended Appalachian State University for their accredited Interior Design program. I spent many years after college working as both a residential and commercial interior designer before deciding to become a real estate agent. I enjoy every aspect of the business of homes, and I am constantly striving to learn more and be better.

I fell in love with Boone the first time my family took me skiing when I was 5 years old. I knew I would eventually make it my home. There is something about the culture that drew me in with the amazing people, sense of adventure, and the “come as you are” demeanor.

I spend part of the winter as a Ski and Snowboard Instructor at Appalachian Ski Mountain. I also enjoy anything that involves being outdoors, caring for my growing plant collection, and being dragged around by my young Border Collie, Penny.
